Jiu-jitsu is challenging. Each one of us has a choice when it comes to challenges: to view them as obstacles or opportunities. To fixate on why we can’t, or focus on why we should. We look at jiu-jitsu as a tool to lead us to something better: quality of life, improved health, or something we can’t yet imagine. It begins by accepting the challenge, making the commitment and then outdoing yourself every damn day.
This is why Straight Blast Gym Burien shares one simple, unifying mission: to spread the power of mastery.
One essential ingredient to achieving mastery is a commitment to excellence. Excellence demands that we continually practice ordinary habits which eventually add up to extraordinary achievements. The types of achievements that bring real joy, impact, and fulfillment to our lives.
We believe that everyone has the capacity to achieve mastery. We often lack the environment and guidance to reach it, eventually succumbing to the forces of mediocrity before we reach the goal. Mastery takes time, but it is through the journey that we discover everything we need to achieve excellence. Even though the results may not be measurable in the short term, with consistent effort we will see change.
By committing every day to three core values – fundamentals, positivity, and longevity – we strive to make mastery attainable for everyone through the context of jiu-jitsu.
Mastery in any endeavor is the result of a deep understanding of simple ideas. Throughout our lives, a focus on basic principles is what determines our results.
How we interpret our reality is just as important as what we do in our reality. Negative self-talk is limiting and never accounts for the moments of success you experience.
With consistency, tiny gains can add up to something very significant. We provide a safe and judgment-free environment which leads to the continual improvement of our craft.
Helping Kids in Need
All children can have a positive place in this world. We believe that opportunities to pursue excellence can give them a head start.
We created the Bridge The Gap Program, a 501c3/non-profit organization to provide jiu-jitsu scholarships to children from communities that historically have had least access to resources, services and opportunities. Through jiu-jitsu practice, children will develop the life skills needed to write their own story and bridge the opportunity gap that leaves many children in their situation going the wrong way.
